Still, there are techniques that are performed that increase the likelihood that artificial insemination will lead to getting pregnant. Doctors that perform artificial inseminations will usually prescribe fertility boosting drugs for the woman wishing to undergo the procedure. These drugs, which should be begun at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, will pump up the fertile portion of a woman’s cycle, often causing the release of more than one egg into the uterus. During a normal cycle, a woman will release only one. By causing the release of more eggs, the chances to get pregnant are increased because the sperm have a greater chance of finding an egg inside the uterus.
To determine exactly what part of her cycle a woman who wishes to undergo artificial insemination is in, an ultrasound will be performed at the outset. This is to determine when a woman should start the treatment of fertility enhancing drugs for maximum effectiveness. Once the drugs have been started, continued ultrasounds will be performed so that the doctor can determine when the eggs are released into the uterus, which is the most fertile point of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Once that happens, insemination should occur immediately.
